Access to Justice

Jatan Sansthan’s “Access to Justice” program is a community-driven initiative that aims to empower marginalized groups—especially women, adolescents, and tribal communities—with the knowledge, tools, and support necessary to seek justice, claim their rights, and navigate the legal system effectively.

Program Objective

To reduce gender-based violence and social injustice by increasing legal awareness, enhancing access to justice mechanisms, and building community-based support systems in rural and tribal areas of southern Rajasthan.

Key Interventions & Achievements

  • Legal Literacy Sessions:
Over 8,500+ community members (including 60% women and adolescent girls) have participated in legal awareness sessions covering rights under:
    • POCSO Act, 2012
    • Domestic Violence Act, 2005
    • Child Marriage Prohibition Act, 2006
    • Right to Education, and Labour Rights.
  • Community Legal Volunteers (Nyaya Mitras):
Jatan trained and deployed 65 local volunteers, including frontline workers and SHG leaders, as Nyaya Mitras to support communities with reporting, documentation, and referrals.
  • Support to Survivors:
The program has supported more than 400 survivors of domestic violence, child marriage, and sexual abuse with counseling, legal aid referrals, and access to shelter homes or medical care.
  • Convergence with Stakeholders:
Regular interface meetings were held with:
    • District Legal Services Authorities (DLSA)
    • Police, Child Welfare Committees (CWCs)
    • Protection Officers, Panchayati Raj Institutions (PRIs)
  • Child Marriage Prevention:
Over the past three years, the team has actively intervened in 92 reported cases of child marriage, successfully preventing 61 of them through counseling, legal support, and collaboration with local administration.
  • Legal Resource Materials:
Developed localized IEC tools like audio-visuals, posters, and legal booklets in Hindi and tribal dialects for better comprehension.

Impact

The program is active in 50+ villages across Udaipur, Rajsamand, and Dungarpur districts, and has built a network of community legal champions who continue to promote a culture of legal empowerment and gender justice.
