Kangaroo Mother Care

The KMC program works on-

1. Newborn Survival and Care

Promoting Kangaroo Mother Care as a lifesaving intervention for low birth weight and
preterm babies. Supporting early initiation of KMC in SNCUs, NICUs, PNC, POW and
MNCUs, followed by continuation at home. Improving thermal care, infection prevention,
and early identification of danger signs.
2. Nutrition and Growth
Encouraging exclusive breastfeeding and early initiation of breast milk feeding. Providing
counselling on frequent feeding, weight monitoring, and follow-up care. Supporting steady
weight gain and healthy growth through continuous KMC and nutrition practices.
3. Family and Community Engagement
Training mothers, fathers, and caregivers on correct KMC positioning and duration. Building
the capacity of nurses (ANMs) to promote and monitor KMC.
The Kangaroo Mother Care Program goes beyond clinical care by empowering families and
communities to actively participate in newborn survival and development. Through strong
collaboration with health facilities, frontline workers, and local health systems, the program
ensures continuity of care from hospital to home.

By investing in simple, low-cost, and high-impact practices like Kangaroo Mother Care, the
program envisions healthier newborns, confident mothers, and stronger families, contributing
to improved child survival outcomes in tribal and rural Rajasthan.
